Breakfast at our
holiday let, Hafod Cae Maen, this morning then off to tour Portmeirion, in
Gwynedd, North Wales ( 5 minutes from our accommodation ).
Portmeirion was the
brainchild of architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis. He wanted to develop a site
with the idea that you could place buildings on a natural location without
defiling it. Using reclaimed/collected structures from buildings across the
world, as well as designing and constructing buildings of his own, he created a
unique and magical "holiday retreat for the more discerning"!
Opened officially in
1926, to great acclaim, he continued to work on the "Village" for the
next 50 years.
Made famous as a
movie location in the 1950's and 60's, it is most known as the site of "The Village" in "The
Prisoner" TV series from 1967-68, starring Patrick McGoohan as
"Number 6", was also Writer, Director, Executive Producer of the
series.
And one of the most famous exports from Portmeirion, is "Portmeirion fine china.
